Calculating Grand and Regional/National Points in CFA
article courtesy Leslie Carr
“Points – a word you’ll hear often. How many points did you get? What’s your total points?”
There are two types of points: grand points and regional/national points. They are very different and are calculated differently. As a cat can earn both types of points at a show, it helps to think of this as two different races.
Grand Points: used to achieve grand champion grand premier and grand household pet titles and only awarded to adults. Also used when claiming bronze/silver/gold champion/premier.
Regional and National Points: used to score for breed win titles, and regional and national win titles. ALL cats in the show compete for these points.
Championship & Premiership Grand Points:
Championship and premiership grand points accumulate over the life of the cat (can span multiple seasons) until the cat earns the grand title.
Determine the Count
Count the number of opens and champions/premiers present in your cats competitive class (breed, championship, premiership). Cats must be present in at least one ring to count. Subtract one cat from that number (your cat, since you can’t defeat yourself). That is the “count” for that class.
Scoring in Breed Classes
In class judging, best champion or premier gets all the points from the count for the breed. The judge will award a purple ribbon to the cat in the breed that gets the points. Only one cat will get points within a breed.
Scoring in Finals
Points in specialty finals will include only the opens and champions/premiers for that specialty (longhair or shorthair). Points in allbreed finals include all opens, champions/premiers.
In allbreed rings, the judge will award BOTH best through 3rd best longhair and shorthair champions AND best through 3rd best allbreed champions. In premiership, the judge awards only best and second best. Judges can also include champions/premiers in their top 10 (or 15) awards. Those champions/premiers will receive grand points based on their placement to the other champions/premiers in the final.
Grand champion/premier point scoring in finals is done in 10% increments
Best – earns the entire amount of the count – 100%
2nd Best – earns 90% of the count
3rd Best – earns 80% of the count
Grand points are rounded per ring (up if .5 or greater).
IMPORTANT
A cat can only receive points from one award per ring – that which carries the highest point number. A cat does not count points from both a breed award and final award under the same judge.
Household Pet Grand Points
Determine the Count
Count the number of cats present competing in the household pet category Then subtract one from that count (which would be your cat). That is the “count” for the class.
Grand Household Pet scoring is done in 5% increments
Scoring in Finals
Best Cat in a Household pet final will receive 100% of the count
2nd Best – earns 95%
3rd Best – earns 90%
4th Best -earns 85%
When the cat achieves the number of points its scoring area requires for the title of grand, it no longer counts grand points. Remember that you must have filed your championship title claim form and been in 6 qualifying rings to become a grand. If you achieve the points necessary on the first day of a two day show, you can ask the master clerk to transfer your cat to grand for the second day.
National & Regional Points
National & regional points accumulate throughout a show season, which runs from May 1 through April 30. The CFA award program will award titles of “National Winner – NW”, “Regional Winner – RW” and “Breed Winner – BW” at the end of each show season. Additional information concerning these titles can be found in the CFA show rules, available at https://cfa.org/cfa-manuals/
Determine the count
All cats present in at least one ring of the competitive category (breed, kitten, championship, premiership or household pets) are counted. Subtract one from that number and you have the count.
Scoring in Breed Class – Kitten/Championship/Premiership
Cat that receives the brown (Best of Breed or Division) ribbon receives the total count.
Cat that receives the orange (2nd Best of Breed or Division) ribbon receives 95% of the count
National & regional point scoring in finals is done in 5% increments
Scoring in Finals – All Classes
Best cat – receives the total count
2nd Best cat – receives 95% of the count
3rd Best cat – receives 90% of the count
(and so on, each placement decreases by 5%)
IMPORTANT
A cat can only receive points from one award per ring – that which carries the highest point number. A cat does not count points from both a breed award and final award under the same judge.
NOTES:
The Master Clerk will post a list showing the unofficial count for the show. It is broken by each competitive class. Instead of figuring final counts by counting cats in the catalog, you can refer to the unofficial count they produce.
CFA has a site that can be used to show you the grand points earned by your cat. Available by subscription and referred to as “Herman”, it is updated normally by the Thursday following each show. https://ecat.cfa.org/public/hermanonline.aspx
The CFA App has a link to a scoring tool written by Mary Kolencik. It will calculate either your grand or regional/national points. http://www.marykats.net/tools/score2018.html
